In the recent weeks, I've been in the hunt for some
no-nonsense, hard-hitting sound vibes; the kind that
makes you shake in your boots, the hairs on your neck
well erect, your mind drawn far away from this dark,
misty planet .
This is the answer.
Welcoming Fábio, the man behind . . .

Who is the man behind dare 2 disco?
dare2disco is a solo project by Fábio Fernandes!I’m a Sound Engineer and loads of other things happening in the area of music production. I’ve two other solo projects: mould ( a blend of electro, funk and house) and simple ( from space-disco to ambient through glitch-jazz…). Also I’m a member of Dodgy Choices, a project that was once a DJ’ing duo but is at the moment being reformatted to a Record Label, Promoting Company and Artist Agency; and half of Whatdafunk? Soundsystem, a DJ partnership where we play loads of good shit and some bullshit too.
I also play drums and percussions, specially Djambé, a traditional African drum.
How did you come about with the name and what got you into this scene?
The name just popped into my head… not a big story behind that, sorry. ahahaha. About the scene, well I don’t feel myself belonging to any particular scene really…I’m into electro and techno as I am into Afro-Beat. I just don’t do Afro-Beat because I don’t know many people into it around here who want to set up a band. I just play it as a DJ sometimes.
I love jazz, reggae, drum’n’bass , ambient, progressive rock, ska, IDM, whatever…
that’s my scene.
What has influenced your electro touch?
It’s going to sound strange but, although I’m doing what you can call maximal electro/techno my main influence on this was through minimal. Their approach to sound, the rhythms, the space and silence. Then I just changed it for maximum output, but in essence, my stuff is still quite minimal. I also got influenced by the nu-breaks from late 90’s (Adam Freeland, Prodigy, Kevin Beber, Propellerheads, etc) and a bit of the guys from the Division label (by Noisia).
What was the first record that you picked up? How did that change your musical sense to bring you to where you are today?
The first record I bought I can’t remember, but the first thing I remember hearing was Pink Floyd. My father used to play it in the house stereo all the time. I must have been 4 or 5 years old by the time of my first memories and since then it totally shaped my perception of music. Their approach to rock and sound in particular was unique at the time and still is for me a reference to what I’m aiming for.
Who do you feel are the real headliners of the
year at the moment?
Huuummm… Le Castle Vania, TEPR, Cecile, Fuck Dat Shit, Housemeister, Circuit Freq, and of course dare2disco!
For those of us who don't know, what is the music scene like in Hamburg?
It’s great! You have public for any kind of music style you can think of and places to harbour all the trends, which is really great as it gives you freedom to try new things and you know there’ll be a place for you to play. Reeperbahn and Sternschanze areas are the places to go when you come into town. I specially like Foo’s nights at the Baalsaal on Thursdays with local guys and some big names from Germany and Europe. What dared you to attempt remixing "Zara" and "Wow Its Techno Music"?
“Zara” was love at first hearing! It’s a really different track, not so much dancefloor but it had the guts! I got in contact with Rapide through myspace and we arranged a swap. He’s remix for my “Ta-Ka-Tum” track should be ready soon. “Wow Its techno music” is an original from Fuck Dat Shit. These guys from Portugal are booming over there and are already signed for our Dodgy Choices label. That track is really powerful and a dance-floor filler for sure. Their remix for “Ta-Ka-Tum” is also wicked!! I love it and I play it live more often than my original! Ahahah I guess I heard my version so many times that I like to go for a change once in a while.
I’m remixing “Neon colours plastic electro” for Schuster & Schneider which will be ready really soon. These guys are from Italy you can tell by their sound! There will also be a collaboration with Boltzmann from Slovenia. He’s involved on the maximal nights in K4 club (a GREAT club, I loved when I was there!) in Ljubljana, and he approached me for a remix too.
Do you plan to add any vocals to future tracks?
For this “Neon colours plastic electro” remix I recorded some vocals. I like instrumental tracks but it’s easier for people to recognize your tracks when there are some lyrics on it. I don’t stress too much about it.
what DO you want to see in a club?
People having fun and truly listening to the music. That’s it!

and DON'T you want to see in a club?
People going out to socialize and “see and be seen”. I hate that!
What was the last gig you played at? Where's the next one?
The last one was in Porto, Portugal with Rygen (the dodgy choices dj duo) an the next one will be as Whatdafunk? Soundsystem, this Friday.

What is the rest of 2009 going to look like for dare 2 disco?
Any shout outs to the world beyond?

I hope even better than until now. I’ve been really busy with all these remixes and getting the new EP ready, and also all the background work you need when putting up a project like Dodgy Choices. Maybe doing a tour around Europe (well, a tour around North America would be great too).
