Interview: NROTB

Nonetheless, let us commence.

Presenting:

So first off, if you gentlemen could please introduce yourselves:

Mister Ed: I'm Mister Ed and my partner is Mr. P. We both live in Montreal, Canada.

Mr. P: Hi I'm Patrice aka Mr. P and I live on an island in the St. Laurent river called Montreal...

How did you meet and start working together?

Mister Ed: We worked together as motion graphic designers for a few years. In 2007 we decided to do a party for my Birthday. We wanted a "theme" for the party and decided to call it the Nu Ravers On The Block party; since we were newcomers to the scene and it was big in the UK at the time. It was a kind of pun. We found it could be a great theme for the party as we play a lot of Klaxons/Van She and stuff like that back then. Lots of people came out and we decided to do a monthly party with the same theme as there was no such scene in Montreal yet. We invited a lot of new artists like Felix Cartal, Passions, Les Petits Pilous, Heartsrevolution, Jokers Of The Scene, Bang Gang DJ's, Duke Dumont, Don Rimini, etc... Now we throw less parties and are more into the remixing and music production. We now collaborate with I Love Neon here in Montreal for throwing events.

Mr. P: We met a long time ago... We had lots of friends in common, but it was working together as motion graphic designers that we connected the dots about music...

What label are you currently under?

Mister Ed: Basically we released our single "Take Me Upp" on Coco Machete but we remixed some stuff for several labels including Iheartcomix and PIAS in the UK, Anti/Epitaph and have more to come in the following months.

Mr. P: We have a new EP coming up on Plant Music... Its going to be our track Droplet and is going to include 3 remixes + another new original track.

Any new releases on the way?

Mister Ed: We've just finished a remix for Drop The Lime and we are working on a remix for Acid Jacks. We are also working on an original track with Spanish vocals from Boogat too.

Who is in charge of the production and how did you learn to create such a cutting-edge sound?

Mister Ed: Basically I am in charge of the production aspect of our tracks/remixes but we always finish things together. Mr. P throws up ideas and writes some ideas and then we finish the track in the studio together.

Mr. P: If I start something, I will give it to Ed, then he will work on it and we finish it together... Usually get starts the roots of the track in the studio, then we work on it together
until we have something we like and are happy with. After that
we gives ourselves a week to re-listen and check if we want
to make changes or add little details.

What kind of mood do you try to create on the dancefloor when you hit the decks?

Mister Ed: We always try to build up a set like a rollercoaster ride. With anticipation parts and "release" parts where we want people to go crazy and climb on the stage! We play different genres of house music and we always aim to build a proper set where each parts/style fit together, not playing random bangers.

Mr. P: Usually we build up the crowd and try to make them go crazy... We like to tell a story in our set. We start somewhere, then bring them somewhere else, but always focusing on keeping the music center on big room tracks with big breakdowns, big bass, intense sounds...

Most memorable night?

Mister Ed: When we played before Don Rimini at our party last year. We had a gig at Circa in Toronto the day before and practically didn't sleep at all. We were so tired as we had to take the train back to Montreal and prepare the party during the day. Before the gig, we were so dead but it turned out to be one of our best gigs! It was just crazy!

Mr. P: Hmmm.. so many good nights. Our 1st year anniversary was pretty dope, we had Les Petites Pilous, Felix Cartal, and Heartsrevolution.. We ended up with 1000 people and the line up outside went all the way around the block... That was a great party!

I would also say the show we played with Moby during the winter here in Montreal, there was a huge snowstorm and everything was closed and there was 2 feet of snow in the street and there were like over 1200 people at the show... The setup was amazing, we played for 3 hours straight, then Moby was late because everything was delayed, so we ended up playing for 5 hours straight... What a night!

The Neon 9th year anniversary was crazy too with Boys Noize and MSTRKRFT, big show in Montreal with an overcapacity venue. The energy and the party booth was so intense, definitely one of the best nights... I could tell you so many more!

Absolutely epic, I'd say.

Who is the craziest artist you guys have spun with?

Mister Ed: Passions was dope, he left the decks to climb onto the ceiling in the club. It was crazy!

Mr. P: One of our first shows with Trash Fashion, crazy dudes!

Any plans to spin in Toronto any time soon?

Mister Ed: Nothing planned yet, but we would love to come back. We played a lot for AD&D before at Circa.

Favorite dancefloor killer at the moment?

Mister Ed: Kim Fai dub remix of Kid Sister

Mr. P: The Yeah Yeah Yeah's - Heads Will Roll (A-Trak Remix)

Any other jobs aside from NROTB?

Mister Ed: Well we both work as graphic designers in a design studio.

Finally, any shoutouts to the world beyond?

Mr. P: Yes big thanks to all our friends, supporters & fans, and all the MTL family, you know who you are!
